At Fisher Meredith we offer a range of legal services to help you deal with family disputes or make arrangements before entering into a relationship.
Cohabitation
In contrast to married couples, cohabiting couples have no legal obligations towards one another that arise from their relationship, except in relation to common children. However, it is usually on separation that unmarried couples become, often painfully, aware of the limited legal rights they have.
It is strongly recommended to seek independent legal advice before living together in order to be fully aware of what rights each partner has and how to protect them.
Whether you are an unmarried couple considering separating or signing a cohabitation agreement, contact our Family Law team on 0800 014 7445.
Collaborative Law
Collaborative Law is a non-confrontational way of resolving issues arising from relationship breakdown. The aim of this approach is to resolve family disputes without having to attend court.
Some of the benefits of Collaborative Law include better control by both parties of the process, and a constructive and less stressful environment for conducting the discussions.
If you are considering divorce or civil partnership dissolution, contact our trained Collaborative lawyers on 0800 014 7445 to discuss if this is the right method for you.
Dissolution of Civil Partnerships
Although dissolution is a process that legally terminates a Civil Partnership, other issues arising as a result, such as children maintenance and financial disputes will have a separate procedure. In order to apply for dissolution a person must have been in a Civil Partnership for at least a year.
Many same sex couples in a civil partnership do not fully realise their rights and what they can expect should their relationship breakdown. To discuss your individual case with one of our Family Law solicitors please call 0800 014 7445.
Divorce and Financial Issues on Divorce
Divorce is the legal process that will bring a marriage to an end. A person must have been married for at least a year in order to apply for a divorce. Very often there are disputes over children and financial issues that need to be dealt with as a result. It is important these matters are formalised.
By working closely with Fisher Meredith’s Property and Children teams, our Family lawyers can provide legal expertise in disputes over children and property transactions arising from divorce. To speak to one of our Family Law solicitors please call 0800 014 7445.

Fisher Meredith has formed close links with Home-Start, Kidspace and also Divorce Support Group who provide counselling services to parents and children going through the divorce process.
Domestic Violence
Verbal abuse, physical aggression or assault, sexual abuse, neglect, emotional manipulation and financial control are just some of the behaviours classified as domestic violence. Domestic abuse can happen amongst married, dating and cohabiting couples.
If there is an immediate danger, it is essential to call the police to seek urgent help.
Our specialist domestic violence team within the Family Law department is dedicated to seeking protection for clients and making urgent Court applications. To speak to one of our Family Law solicitors please call 0800 014 7445.
Mediation
Mediation is a voluntary process that enables couples to resolve their disputes without going to a family court. The goal of Mediation is to assist separating and divorcing couples to make arrangements for their children and finances.
To determine whether Mediation is suitable for both parties involved in separation please call our trained Mediators on 0800 014 7445.

Pre- and Post-nuptial Agreements
Pre-nuptial agreements, similarly to pre-civil partnership agreements, set out what should happen to a couple’s assets in the event their marriage or civil partnership breaks down. Post-nuptial agreements deal with the same issues but are taken out during marriage or civil partnership rather than before.
It is essential to follow legal requirements when signing these agreements hence downloading a pre-nuptial contract without specialist legal knowledge can disadvantage either party at a later date.
If you are considering a pre- or post-nuptial agreement, our Family lawyers can draft a bespoke agreement to suit your specific circumstances. Please call 0800 014 7445 to speak to one of our Family solicitors.
